We strongly recommend travel insurance be purchased for travel to South America. Travellers with pre-existing health conditions will need to apply immediately once they know they are travelling to ensure enough time is allowed for the insurer to assess. The crew at Destination can assist if required.

  • Vaccinations

South America is filled with extraordinary exotic escapes - from scenic mountain hikes to gorgeous beaches, the incredible Amazon rainforest and river, deserts, and remarkable ecological and cultural diversity. There are a range of vaccinations for South America that you may be recommended to receive. The vaccinations depend on where you are travelling and other factors. Ensure you can enjoy your trip safely and put your health first by receiving all the required immunisations with plenty of time to spare so you can build immunity. You will want to start planning to get travel vaccinations for South America as soon as you know for sure that you are going to go. We highly recommend you make an appointment with your travel Doctor.

  • Altitude Sickness

As we are travelling to a high-altitude destination it is important that we adhere to some basic guidelines to ensure our time spent away is enjoyable and hassle free. Altitude sickness, also called soroche in Peru, which is like a bad hangover, normally occurs at the height of 8, 200 feet /2,500 metres and above. It is basically caused by the low level of oxygen. As we go higher, the air becomes thinner, resulting in less oxygen that our body needs to function well. The hotel we are staying at has oxygenated rooms and we will ensure that you have plenty of water and coca tea and leaves to assist with the acclimatisation. As a rule of thumb, we would recommend not drinking too much on the flight over and avoiding heavy meals.
